Thank you all for the interesting responses about your community and what makes it ‘unique’ to you compared to other rural communities in Idaho.

I grew up in a small farming community in Idaho near the Utah border and I still think about it every day, the views and colors and smells and intense farm work we did (pulling rye, driving around and around in a tractor for 12 hours a day, herding cattle, etc) helped shape my life and world view. It’s that sense of place that helps define who we are and how we relate to the world around us.

I hope you’re all getting comfortable and familiar with the blogging process. Mary, MJ and I thank you for all the time and hard work you’ve devoted to this part of Horizons and know it’s just a small part of what you are all doing in your communities.

Grangeville is surrounded by acres of federal forest ground, the largest being the Nez Perce National Forest. We are the gateway to three beautiful wilderness areas: The Frank Church River of No Return, The Seven Devils Wilderness and The Gospel Hump Wilderness Area. We have access to numerous rivers (Salmon, Lochsa, Clearwater and Selway) with some of the best white water rafting and fly fishing in the country. We have beautiful landscapes, a small ski resort (Snowhaven), a lumbermill (Bennett Forest Industries) and miles of rich farmland.

These are all attributes we can capitalize on…it’s beautiful. The burden of it all is that “beauty can only take us so far”. We live in the wilderness. We are isolated. That works o.k. for the lumbermill and farming, but for other industries, we are a long way from anywhere. We lack infrastucture and connectivity for new industries to be able to locate here. The railroad is gone, so shipping has become more costly. Our local economy is struggling, with several vacant storefronts and not nearly the commerce that was here even ten years ago.

So…our challenge will be how do we preserve this beautiful place, develop additional industry and thrive at the same time?!?

What is something unique about your Horizons community that you’d like to share with the rest of the world? What makes your community different from the one right down the road? For example, Sun Valley has the beautiful landscape, ski resorts, etc. but the tourism industry has also left behind many local people who are now unable to afford to live in the town they work in…

Our Coordination System Action team met and held a conference call with Jackson, Minnesota to learn how they set up their Community Foundation. Also present at this meeting were Chin Le and Katie Cooper from neighboring community, Cottonwood. As we explore forming a community foundation/coalition, we are considering making the non-profit bigger than just the Grangeville community and inviting the Cottonwood Horizons to join us in our efforts. Our hope is to begin thinking more regionally rather than just as one community.

The converstaion with Jackson was very informative and inspiring. Jackson was a pilot Horizons community four years ago and are still going strong. They have spent a lot of time successfully developing leadership and structural change in their community. We will continue to glean information from them. Thank you Jackson!!!

Congrats to Mountain Mama of Kendrick/Juliaetta, she’s our weekly winner! Even though she took me to task for forgetting about those of you in remote areas with only dial-up internet access… she persevered after many grueling hours on the scavenger hunt! I will definitely keep in mind your technology limits in the future…

Seven Grangeville Horizons members attended the Horizons Summit held in Grangeville on Thursday, January 24th.  The Summit was attended by Horizons community members from more than 8 communities as well as local and statewide partners.  The Summit provided an opportunity for each community to share the vision and action that has come out of their Horizons experience and to seek assistance from the potential partners who were present.  Potential partners had the opportunity to hear about all of the great community work happening across northern Idaho in Horizons communities.  Lots of connections were made between Horizons communities and with potential partners who can provide assistance as the action teams move forward.

Grangeville’s Action Team status report was presented by Scott Russell.  A copy of the report can be viewed at the beginning of this post.

The Grangeville Horizons Coordination System Action Team has determined that their number one goal is development of a community entity with 501(c)3 non-profit status.  The Action Team is in the process of working through the process to form a community-wide structure and system for developing and implementing a variety of projects that will target issues of poverty.  Development of a non-profit entity will allow for an organized and coordinated approach to community-wide planning and fund seeking for projects that help the community reach its vision of being a vibrant small town that has a powerful sense of community with opportunities for all people to thrive and grow.

The Grangeville Horizons Steering Committee is thrilled with the emerging leadership coming out of the Horizons project!

Along with more seasoned community leaders, several new faces are chairing Horizons Action Teams.

Action Team Co-Chairs include:

Leadership Development Action Team:  Greg Bailey and Heidi Lindsley

Recreation Action Team:  Cathy Wassmuth and Terra Hill

Downtown Action Team:  Tommiann Whitten and Annelle Urbahn

Business Development Action Team:  Cody Edwards and Marina Bates

Coordination Systems Action Team:  Hanna Young

Education Action Team:  Katy Eimers and Harold Gott

Although some of the Action Team co-leaders are long-time community members who have been involved in many community projects, the rest are new to community leadership.  The Steering Committee is very excited to have this infusion of creative enthusiasm into leadership of the Horizons project!
